Jerash, located in Jordan, is one of the best-preserved ancient Roman cities in the world, offering a fascinating insight into Roman history and architecture. Nicknamed the “Pompeii of the East”, this city is full of impressive ruins, majestic colonnades and ancient theatres, testifying to the grandeur of Roman civilisation.
Points of Interest
Hadrian’s Arch: At the entrance to the city, this imposing triumphal arch was erected in honour of the visit of Emperor Hadrian in 129 AD. It sets the tone for the rest of the visit with its architectural grandeur.
The Oval Forum: A large oval-shaped square surrounded by columns, this is one of Jerash’s most iconic features. This place once served as a centre for public gatherings and important ceremonies.
The Colonnaded Street: Also known as the Cardo Maximus, this long cobblestone street is lined with imposing columns and restored Roman buildings, offering a striking view of the urban layout of the time.
The South Theatre: This large ancient theatre can accommodate over 3,000 spectators and is still used for events and festivals today. Climb the steps for a breathtaking view of the entire archaeological site.
The Temples of Zeus and Artemis: These majestic temples, dedicated to Roman deities, offer a glimpse into the religious life of the time. The Temple of Artemis, in particular, is impressive with its columns still standing.
